I finished producing my album and was eager to sell it online as quickly as possible. I began searching for music distribution services and noticed some differences. To truly evaluate, take time to read about the service, terms and conditions, and weigh out the options. Connecting musicians with the power of these established online retailers is amazing.
Here are 4 areas to explore when choosing a distribution service for your music.
- Barcode: If you don't have a barcode, you will need one for your album, EP or single. It is unique to you and is associated with your product for sales tracking. Songcast and Tunecore currently provide it for free with their service
- Royalties: Ideally, you want 100% royalties for your work. Some companies take a cut, such as 9% leaving you with 91%. Know what plans give you the best percentage and make a list of pros and cons between each agreement. Tunecore and Songcast currently offer 100% due to the artist
- Online Retailers: Music distribution is fun because you get to choose which stores you want to sell your music in. Each service may have different online retailers ranging from iTunes, Rhapsody, and Napster to Beatport, Walmart and Best Buy. Choose the service with the stores you want. Some stores may provide better markets for different genres. Do your research
- Cost: Pricing varies. For example, Songcast charges on a monthly plan of $5.99 or they sometimes have promos such as receiving some free months if you pay for the year upfront. Their monthly cost is justified because you get to upload an unlimited number of albums to your account. Tunecore charges for album setup fees, and charges $0.99 per store you want distribution for. Both options still come out to be very affordable. Choose which service fits your budget best and future production plans.
