As an independent artist, I used to be overwhelmed with the idea of where to begin my music promotion campaign. My marketing team consists of my business partner and I. We started marketing our album with a marketing budget of $0. Let the creative process begin.
When dealing with selling music online, your central focus should be on increasing your online visibility. The key to music promotion is trying to make it easy for fans to find you and learn more about your band, tours, gigs, and merchandise.
- Step 1: Myspace Music: Myspace music allows musicians to create a band page for free, upload music, pictures, a biography, tour dates and bulletins for your fans to keep updated all the time. Myspace provides a great outlet for music promotion, building out a mailing list and displaying merchandise for sale to support your band.
- Step 2: Electronic Press Kit: create an electronic press kit. This is basically a condensed description of your music operation. Talk about what makes your music unique, your accomplishments, and provide some links to your audio work. Use your electronic press kit to inform future clients and gain some credibility. These are great for radio station promos and mailing press kits.
- Step 3: Press Release: There are several press release sites that offer free posting for your news. A press release is great because it establishes credibility with your music operation. Announce your album release, describe your company and future projects, and attract interest for any networking opportunities. A press release is a must for your portfolio.
Your budget doesn t determine your effectiveness, your effort does. Chip away and make your impact. Music promotion allows your band to think of different ways to turn your fans into customers.
